2020 September intake has started! What to expect for March 2021?

2020 has been a very atypical year in many senses. Borders closed, quarantine, wearing masks, commercial establishments closed, schools closed… the list goes on and on.

In China, 2020’s March intake was cancelled and no student went to school the whole semester. Starting June/July, some schools have started to make "return to classes” preparations by implementing strict prevention and safety rules.

For international students though, the situation has been quite different as borders has not reopen and still need to wait for central government’s announcement. For September intake, admission procedures in many universities were held as usual, with extended deadlines and more flexible requirements. Nevertheless, lesson arrangements had to be adapted to the current situation and a vast majority of universities opted to provide online classes for all those students who are currently outside of China. For students who stayed in China during the Covid-19 outbreak, some universities prepared presencial classes for them to continue their studies.

Classes, whether online or presencial, have started by mid September in most universities. Applications for March intake 2021 should begin by late October or early November. Signup and stay up-to-date with UniApply’s newsletter for upcoming application seasons.

Will international students be able to return to China by March 2021?

It is not clear yet. Consulting with many universities, what we have been told is that they are optimistic that by March intake 2021, borders have been fully reopened, allowing students to come to China again. However, they still need for the Chinese government’s official announcement on this matter. If that happens, admission offices will begin issuing JW202 forms for all admitted students so they can proceed with visa application. Before there is any official communication from your university, we recommend to NOT make any travel arrangements as you will most probably not be allowed to enter China.
