In the past few months, Chinese authorities have been gradually granting permissions for commercial venues to operate under some conditions and given they implement the appropriate COVID-19 prevention and control practices. Malls, restaurants, and now cinemas are getting back to “normal” activities.

Movie theaters in China were allowed to re-open on July 20th with a 30% max capacity. Some prevention measures include the mandatory use of masks during the entire movie, arrangements to avoid consecutive seatings, full disinfection procedures after each screening and extending time intervals between shows to avoid gatherings during entering and exiting.

Measures seem to have worked until now and given that many Chinese cities have not seen new infection clusters in recent months; authorities raised the occupancy rate for cinemas to 50 percent of maximum capacity on August 14th. Latest announcement is for theaters to operate at 75% capacity beginning September 25th. Hopefully this is a sign that we can get our lives back to normal in a near future.
