Beginning August 10th, the Chinese government has officially announced the gradual reopening of its borders. As of August 27th, foreign nationals of 39 European countries, 16 Asian countries, and Canadians holding valid residence permits (including work permits, and permits for family reunion and personal matters) are allowed to apply for Chinese visas.

Although the reopening process has begun, all travelers must be aware that there are strict restrictions and requirements in place. Some of these include providing negative COVID-19 tests before and after arriving China, as well as being subject to a 14-day quarantine period in a designated facility (expenses to be covered by each traveler).

As for international students who are bound to start or continue studying in China, there has been no official announcements on this matter. Chinese universities have recommended students to be patient and wait for their official communications to start arranging their travel to China. However, it is expected for international students to return China no earlier than March 2021 (Spring semester). Meanwhile, a majority of universities have prepared to start the Fall semester with online classes; though others will cancel and postpone until next Spring.

UniApply recommends all admitted international students who are currently outside of China to NOT make any travel arrangements unless your university has advise you to. Chinese embassies are also still not processing X type visas. Avoid any inconveniences that may be caused by doing otherwise indicated.
