There are many types of Chinese visa, like tourist L type, business M type, but the one we are interested in here is X type for study purposes.

NOTE: all who are willing to study in China MUST get an X type visa to enter China as this is the only type of visa that is allowed for study purposes; X1 for students staying more than 6 months and X2 for those who stay for less than 6 months.

Students who successfully get admitted to any Chinese university will be provided with original copies of the admission letter and the visa application form for foreign students (better known as JW201/202 form). Your local Chinese embassy will ask you to show these two documents along with other requirements that vary from embassy to embassy, and normally within a week you should be getting your visa. Under normal circumstances, admitted students should have no problems with the visa; now, if you have come to China and there are records of having broken any laws and regulations, that’s a different story.

For students staying more than 6 months, once you arrive and enter China with your X1 visa, you will have 30 days to change your visa to a temporary residence permit. Your university will assist you in this process.
